Sourced: Health.com By Sean Kelley
THURSDAY, July 23, 2009 (Health.com) – An experimental drug making its way through clinical trials not only shows promise in helping obese patients lose weight, but it also may improve blood sugar in those who are obese and have type 2 diabetes.
Orexigen Therapeutics plans to seek approval from the Federal Drug Administration in the first half of 2010 for Contrave, a drug that combines naltrexone, which is used to treat alcohol and drug addictions, and bupropion, which is used to fight seasonal affective disorder and depression, and as a smoking cessation drug.
According to Orexigen, the combination was chosen “in order to block compensating mechanisms that attempt to prevent long-term, sustained weight loss.”
Bowel cancer kills 80 Australians every week, yet nearly all cases can be cured if found early
Help the Cancer Council campaign to raise awareness of bowel cancer and the importance of free screening for everyone over 50.
The National Bowel Cancer Screening Program is currently only available to select age groups which means more than 5 million Australians are missing out on a simple test that could save their lives.
Cancer Council believe every Australian over 50 has the right to a free National Bowel Cancer Screening Program.
Cancer Council are asking all Australians to email their local Member of Parliament urging them to put pressure on the Australian Government to expand the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program to include two-yearly screening for everyone over 50 by 2012.
